Iraq's top diplomat says the Arab League will not ask Syrian President Bashar Assad to resign at a summit in Baghdad this week.

The mounting crisis in Syria will be a top priority at the summit.

Iraqi Foreign Minister Hoshyar Zebari told reporters Monday he believes Arab leaders will agree on a ``doable'' solution to end the yearlong bloody conflict in Syria in line with Arab League proposals.

He said the League would maintain support for peaceful regime change, but Syrians ultimately must lead that process.

Syria has not been invited to the three-day summit that opens on Tuesday. Zebari said at least eight heads of government will attend.
