Avoid obscene films: Saudi Mufti

Saudi Arabia’s top Islamic scholar (Mufti) has urged wives to avoid watching what he described as obscene films to protect their marriage during a fiery Friday prayer sermon devoted to high divorce rates in the Gulf Kingdom.

Sheikh Abdul Aziz bin Abdullah Al Shaikh also cautioned Saudi couples against divulging their marital secrets to friends and advised wives not to go out of their houses with permission from their husbands.

In his sermon in Riyadh, the Mufti blamed both the husband and wife as well as their families for the high divorce in Saudi Arabia and said all of them should join hands in tackling marital problems before they reach courts.

“Wives have a great responsibility in safeguard your husband’s honour and reputation…they should not be misled and deceived by obscene films which are primarily aimed at spreading vice,” he said, according to local newspapers.

“Women should also avoid going out of their houses without permission from their husbands nor should they admit to their houses any one who is not accepted or approved by their husbands.”

Sheikh Abdul Aziz said extravagant spending by wives is another key reason for divorce in Saudi Arabia, with a population of around 27 million.

“Wives should consider their husbands’ circumstances and should not burden them with intolerable things…they also should not spend the husbands’ money without informing them in advance…husbands and the wives should also not divulge their marital secrets as this reflects only immorality and carelessness.”
