Bahrain has dismantled a secret terrorist cell linked to Iran’s Revolutionary Guard and the Iranian-backed terrorist Lebanese group Hezbollah.

The Iranian-linked cell was plotting a series of dangerous bombings in Bahrain and was led by brothers Ali Fakhrawi and Mohamed Fakhrawi, who are members of another secret terrorist group, Quroob Al Basta. The group is linked to the Saraya Al Ashtar (the Al Ashtar Brigades), the terrorist network which carried out a 28 July attack in 2015, Bahraini interior ministry said in a statement carried by Bahrain's official news agency BNA.

Ali Fakharawi had travelled to Iran in 2011 where he arranged for logistic and financial support for the network in Bahrain, the statement added.

The development comes days after Manama expelled the Iranian envoy following the attacks on the Saudi embassy and consulate in Iran.

The attacks on the Saudi diplomatic posts in Tehran and Mashhad came after Saudi Arabia’s execution of 47 convicted terrorists including a prominent  Iranian-backed cleric.

Riyadh cut diplomatic ties with Tehran after the attacks and Bahrain swiftly followed suit, severing diplomatic ties with Tehran and halting all flights to and from Iran.
