Convicted murderer needs $1.6m to avert execution

Published

A 24-year-old Saudi man who was convicted of murder could either be executed on Tuesday or walk free. All this depends on whether he has $1.6 million.

Relatives of the victim are demanding SR eight million ($2.2 million) diya (blood money) from Faisal Aida Al Malki who murdered their son during a fight last year but his father, Aida, says he has managed to raise only SR two million.

“What is left is SR six million ($1.6 million)…I appeal for all benevolent people to help save my son from death. I am begging all those with merciful hearts to let my son return to his mother who has never stopped crying since he was sentenced to death,” Aida told Sabq newspaper.

Aida, from the western Red Sea port of Jeddah, could be beheaded in public on Tuesday if his father fails to pay the entire requested sum.

Saudi Arabia strictly enforces Islamic sharia law, under which a killer can avert execution and walk free in case of payment of diya to the victim’s family.

Diya in Saudi is set at SR300,000 for a Muslim victim but families can reject that sum and insist on the killer’s death to demand more money.
