Couple accused of illegal relationship freed

Kuwaiti authorities freed a Syrian man and a Sri Lankan woman arrested for alleged illegitimate relationship after the couple proved they are married, newspapers reported on Saturday.

Police had accused the two of having two babies from an illegitimate relationship while the woman was charged of aborting a third baby.

On Thursday, the prosecution ordered their release on bail after they produced a document showing they are married, the papers said. But the woman will face trial for aborting her six-month-old infant and burying the baby in a beach area in Kuwait City.

Last week, police raided the couple’s apartment in the capital after a tip-off and found two boys aged two and three years.

Newspapers said Saturday that the unnamed Syrian told the prosecutor he could not register his two born babies because of his financial problems. But he denied prior knowledge of his wife’s abortion.
