Court sentences Gulf girl to 'marriage'

A Saudi court sided with a 30-year-old girl and sentenced her to marriage in a rare legal battle against her father, for refusing her marriage to keep her monthly salary.

The girl had filed a case against her father on the grounds he had rejected all suitors for no real reason apart from continuing to keep her monthly salary for himself.

After investigation by the police, the court found that the girl told the truth and decided to support her plea to marry the latest suitor.

“The court also checked the new suitor and found that he could be a suitable husband.

"It issued a sentence allowing the girl to marry him and depriving the father from his custody of her,” Al Watan daily said in a report from the Western Red Sea port of Jeddah, Saudi Arabia’s second largest city.
