A Saudi man, his wife, their four children and a housemaid escaped with fractures and other light injuries after their car plunged nearly 262 metres into an abyss because of heavy fog, a newspaper in the Gulf kingdom reported on Sunday.

The man was driving back home in the southern mountainous province of Fifa when he lost control of the vehicle at a turn on the narrow road.

“The car plunged 262 metres down into the rocky valley as the driver could not notice the turn because of dense fog,” Sabq Arabic language daily said.

It said all the seven were plucked out by the civil defence in an operation that lasted several hours, adding that they were admitted to hospital for treatment.

Sabq published pictures showing the car was badly damaged after landing on its top between the rocks.
