Heavy security spurs rumours of Saudi bank robbery

Social networks in Saudi Arabia went viral on Monday with rumours that one of its largest banks had been robbed, triggering swift denial by the police.

Some newspapers in the Gulf Kingdom had earlier carried the rumors that the Saudi American Bank (Samba) in the capital Riyadh had undergone an armed robbery and that police rushed large units after the burglary.

“The reports about an armed robbery at Samba were totally untrue. The heavy security at the bank was only because of a large increase in visitors to the bank,” Riyadh police spokesman Colonel Fawaz Al Miman said.

3 men held for robbing 141 shops

Saudi police arrested three African men aged between 18 and 20 years on charges of robbing 141 shops selling jewelry and other items.

Police said the three confessed to using knives in some shops and robbing passers-by in the central province of Qasseem.

“They were using rented cars, which they returned to the dealer just after the burglary to mislead police,” Sabq newspaper said, quoting police spokesman Fahd Al Habdan.

He said police searching their house found nearly SR1.2 million (Dh1.18 million) in cash and a large amount of jewellery, electronics and other products.

A Saudi man killed a thief who sneaked into his house after stabbing him many times while he was trying to flee, newspapers reported on Tuesday.

They quoted police as saying the Saudi woke up in the middle of night to find an Arab man inside his house in the eastern town of Dammam.

“He attacked the Arab with a knife and stabbed him many times in the shoulders and back, resulting in his death,” police spokesman Colonel Ziad Al Rugaiti said.
