A Saudi teenager had thought he would easily win a bet by his friends to climb to the top of a mountain during a trip in a hilly area in the Gulf kingdom.

He did win and reached the top but he apparently had not thought of the way back.

The 17-year-old boy, braved by his friends to sit on the top of the mountain in the central province of Al Qassim, accepted the challenge and climbed up without looking downwards as he apparently feared heights, the Saudi Arabic language daily 'Shams' reported on Thursday.

When he was on the top of the mountain, his friends acknowledged their defeat and asked him to get down, the paper said.

“But when he looked down, he was frightened because it was a high hill. They kept encouraging him to climb down but he did not listen to them,” it said.

“He spent his night on the top. He was later rescued by the civil defence but he looked exhausted when he was brought down.”
