I am Caliph Harun Al Rashid and these three women are my concubines. Son’t you know me? Haven’t you ever heard of Harun Al Rashid?

The words above were not part of a new film depicting the life of Arab Muslim Caliph Harun Al Rashid, who ruled Iraq nearly 1300 years ago and was reputed to have many concubines at his palace in Baghdad.

The words were said by a Saudi man to Kuwait police when they caught him drunk with three women in a public place in the oil rich emirate.

When the police men asked him what he was doing with three women a Lebanese, a Saudi and a Bedoun (without identity) he retorted angrily: “This one serves me, and this spoils me and this massages my body.”

The Kuwaiti daily Al Rai said policemen on a routine patrol had stopped the four when they noticed they were swaying as they walked through Al Salimiya neighbourhood.

It said a policeman who searched the Saudi found four liquor bottles with him.

“They were all arrested and taken to the station. Police later started to receive calls to release the four but the chief of Al Salimiya police station Colonel Shukhair Al Matiri refused their request.

“He ordered his men to keep them in detention for interrogation,” the paper said without elaborating on the mediation to free “the Caliph and his concubines”.
