A Saudi wife has become the latest victim of soaring tomato prices in the Gulf Kingdom after her husband divorced her for buying a big box of the red vegetable, a local newspaper reported on Wednesday.

The unidentified wife, a mother of four, had a heated argument with her husband, a company security employee, after she bought a big box of tomato for around SR40 (Dh39), Alyoum Arabic language daily said.

The argument developed into a fist fight in a crowded street just outside their house in the eastern province of Ihsaa, prompting the woman to ask for divorce.

“He could not even wait to finish her words and divorced her in front of all people…after he calmed down later, the husband said he can not afford buying a box of tomato every three days for a monthly salary not exceeding SR2,000.”

Prices of tomato and other foodstuffs have more than doubled over the past two months because of higher prices from the exporting countries.
