A Saudi man who was jailed five years after boasting about his relationships with women during a television programme in 2009 walked out of prison this week as a ‘muazzen’ (prayer caller), a newspaper said on Tuesday.

A few days after the television interview, a court in the western Saudi Red Sea port of Jeddah sentenced the man to five years in prison and ordered him lashed 1,000 times.

It also decided to impound his car and mobile phone and banned him from travelling outside the Gulf kingdom for five years after serving his jail term.

“He was released from prison two weeks ago after serving his jail term.

“Sources close to him said he has become a ‘muazzen’ and appeared faithful and committed to Islam.

He will likely work as a ‘muazzen’ at a mosque in his area,” the London-based Saudi Arabic language daily Al Hayat said.

It did not identify the man but his picture was published by the Saudi daily Sada.
