A Saudi man was killed and the other family members were seriously injured when his car plunged into a pit after he was chased by the Gulf kingdom’s feared religious police because his music player was on.

Members of the Commission for the Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice had told the man to stop his car when they heard his tape recorder playing loudly on the road in the southern Saudi town of Balijurashi.

After refusing to stop, they chased him with their cars until his vehicle plunged into a pit at a construction site. The man died while his wife lost her hand and children were seriously injured in the accident.

“This is not the first time the Commission men caused such a tragedy,” the Saudi Arabic language daily Sharq said in a report criticizing the Commission.

“Their illegal actions and chases have resulted in scores of deaths in many cities in the kingdom over the past decade.”
