A Saudi husband who slit his wife’s throat on the first day of Eid al Adha (Muslim feast of sacrifice) last week is a sacked soldier who had often been seen drunk in public, the Saudi Arabic language daily Alhayat said on Sunday.

The murderer, who was not named, had threatened to kill his neighbours in the southwestern province of Jazan before he murdered his wife, a school teacher who enjoyed a good reputation at work, the paper said.

“He had been sacked from his job as a military man and had often been seen under the influence of alcohol…he was not in a normal condition when he killed his wife on that day,” the paper quoted a neighbour as saying.

The 30-year-old man, who has been arrested, has two daughters aged 13 and 10 years from his murdered wife, 28.

Police have not yet specified the motive for the crime but Alhayat said the couple had been on bad terms for a long time.

“Many times she had left the house because of disputes but she would then return following mediation by relatives.”
