A major Saudi satellite TV movie channel has come under fire for showing a film containing nude women and other obscene scenes, with viewers calling for punishment of those responsible, a newspaper reported on Tuesday.

The Arabic language daily Sabq said it had received scores of phone calls from Saudi Arabia and other Arab countries criticising MBC Max channel for showing the movie that contained obscene scenes for several minutes.

Sabq did not name the movie but said it was telecast on Monday night and it included “obscene and scandalous” scenes containing many nude women.

“Many viewers called for the punishment of those responsible for showing such scenes so the channel will not repeat these acts,” the paper said.

MBC Max is part of the Middle East Broadcasting Centre (MBC) group, which was launched in London in 1991 before moving its headquarters to Dubai a few years ago. The company, owned by a group of Saudi businessmen and chaired by billionaire Sheikh Walid Al-Ibrahim, comprises 12 channels including the famous Alarabiya News TV as well as MBC 1, MBC2, MBC 3, MBC 4, MBC Action, MBC Drama, MBC Max and others services.
