Mixed-gender iftar sparks controversy

A picture showing a mixed-gender iftar (Ramadan evening meal) in Saudi Arabia has triggered controversy, with some viewers saying it violated traditions.

The picture was posted on social networks by a Saudi company organising an Iftar meal for its male and female staff members.

Newspapers said some viewers described it as a flagrant violation of social traditions and Islamic values and called for the punishment of the company’s management.

Other viewers accepted it as a personal freedom and said the controversy about it was “overplayed.”

Saudi Arabia, one of the most conservative nations, bans mixed-gender meetings in public places unless those involved are closely related.
