Oman’s population stood at around 3.87 million at the beginning of 2013 and nearly a third of them are based in Muscat province, official data showed on Monday.

Expatriates, mostly Asians, accounted for about 44 per cent of the total, much higher than the level in 2003, when it stood at 24 per cent, showed the figures by Oman’s national statistics and information centre.

The report showed the Gulf country’s population increased by six persons every 10 minutes though 2012 and put growth at 4.98 per cent during 2003-2012.

Gender-wise, males in the native population accounted for 50.7 per cent while they were as high as five times the females among expatriates, the report showed.

Non-OPEC Oman is a member of the six-nation Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) along with the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Qatar and Bahrain.
