Saudi Arabia had 4,458 patients suffering from AIDS by the end of 2010, more than triple their number 20 years ago, official data showed on Monday.

Between 1984 and 2001, Saudi AIDS victims were estimated at 1,285 while they increased by 3,173 patients during 2002-2010, showed the statistics by the King Abdul Aziz medical city in the capital Riyadh.

“This means Saudi Arabia had 4,458 patients infected by the acquired immuno-deficiency syndrome at the end of 2010,” said Dr Adel Al Othman, head of the contagious diseases section at the City.

“The number of AIDS patients in the Kingdom has been increasing by nearly 10 per cent annually although the rate worldwide is declining due to awareness campaigns in most countries,” he added, quoted by Saudi newspapers.
