Saudi Arabia’s Interior Minister said officials are on alert for a possible Al Qaeda attack during this year’s Haj pilgrimage.

"We don't rule out any possibility of something that disturbs the security" of the pilgrims, the Associated Press quoted Prince Nayef as telling a news conference.

The annual pilgrimage to the holy cities of Makkah and Madinah begins on Monday and lasts for several days.

Saudi Arabia has launched an aggressive campaign against Al Qaeda in neighbouring Yemen, which officials have said poses a threat to stability
