Saudi professor proposes sex lessons in schools

A Saudi Islamic university professor has proposed the introduction of sex lessons to schools in the conservative Gulf Kingdom, a local daily reported Thursday.

Dr. Mohammed Addullah Al Duwaish, Social Studies professor at the Dammam-based Imam Mohammed bin Saudi Islamic University, said calls for sex education have created confusion among scholars, adding that he saw no problem with the introduction of such lessons on a scientific basis.

“There should be school curricula that include sex education but they have to be legalised before they are introduced,” he told a local social seminar.

“The concept of sex education has created controversy and confusion among scholars and many others….I believe it should be based on a clear scientific basis that will explain the nature of sexual desire and its purpose…by teaching this subject, we should not go into details but focus on generalities that are mainly associated with the legal perspective.”

Saudi newspapers, which reported Duwaish’s rare comments, did not say whether there were any reactions at the seminar to the proposal.
