Swine flu killed 124 people in Saudi Arabia in 2009, according to the Saudi Health Ministry which announced an end to the pandemic disease, the Arabic language newspaper Aljaizra reported on Friday.
The paper, citing a Ministry statement, said around 17,000 swine flu cases were recorded in the Gulf Kingdom in 2009 while there were 875 cases this year.
“The confirmed swine flu cases for this year are estimated at 875 compared with nearly 17,000 cases last year….of those cases last year, 124 died,” it said.
“The disease is now over as an epidemic in the Kingdom and the whole world…only a handful of cases were reported over the past few days…they were all simple cases without any complications.”
The World Health Organization announced last week the end of the swine flu pandemic, more than a year after it was declared.
