Saudi Arabia has no plans to replace men with female workers at jewellery shops as it has done with lingerie and other women’s accessories shops.
“There are no plans to feminise jewellery shops because they are not compatible with standards related to job feminisation in the Kingdom,” said Taiseer Al Mufrej, Director of the information section at the Ministry of Labour.
“We have set specific standards for job feminisation at shops in Saudi Arabia. They stipulate that the shop is involved in selling products which are exclusive to women and do not require men to go there. As for jewellery shops, a man could go there on his own to buy gold and other jewellery for his wife.”
Saudi Arabia has already replaced male with female workers at shops dealing exclusively with women’s products, including lingerie, women perfumes, mother and child care items, and women’s clothes, shoes, bags, stockings and women’s abayas (gowns).
