Saudi says no plan for 'women's ministry'
Saudi Arabia denied plans to create a ministry for women’s affairs, saying reports published in a local newspaper were not true.
The Shura council, the appointed parliament in the conservative Gulf Kingdom, rebuffed a report carried by the London-based Saudi Arabic language daily Al Hayat that Shura would soon debate the creation of a government body for women.
“The report about a proposal for the creation of a ministry or higher council for women is incorrect,” Ajel newspaper said, quoting Shura member Mohammed al Muhanna.
The paper quoted Shura sources as saying the council received recommendation for such a ministry several years ago but that it had not been debated.
