Saudi Arabia is planning to set up its first industrial city that will have only female investors as part of a strategy to create jobs for its local women and encourage them to invest at home, the Saudi press reported on Sunday.

Authorities have already approved the project, which will be constructed on a 500,000-square-metre area in the eastern province of Ihsa, the papers said.

“This project is in part of a plan to support local female cadres and encourage them to get involved in work and investment,” the papers said, quoting Fahd bin Mohammed Al Jubair, director of Al Ihsa secretariat (municipality).

He said the project would pave the way for the construction of more “women-only” industrial zones through the Gulf Kingdom, the largest Arab economy and world’s top oil exporter with a population of around 28 million.
