A Saudi widow who said she used a hot iron on her Indonesian housemaid to treat her from mental illness herself underwent psychiatric tests to determine if she is normal, local newspapers reported on Wednesday.

The 53-year-old woman has been in police custody since she tortured her 23-year-old maid in the central town of Madina last week but was moved to a psychiatry hospital on Tuesday for examination.

“The woman was taken to a hospital for psychiatric analysis…the resultant report is an important measure usually taken in criminal incidents to determine the extent of the accused person’s responsibility”,” Alwatan daily said.

“The medical report will be taken into account by the judge hearing the case when pronouncing his sentence.”

The woman, identified only as Z.S.”, is currently being held in solitary confinement as a “precautionary measure”, where she is also being refused visitors and telephone calls, Al-Watan said.

Sumiati Salan Mustapa, who started her job with that Saudi family three months ago, suffered from serious injuries on the head and body after her employer used a hot iron many times on her for alleged treatment of a mental problem.

Mustaba was moved to the intensive care unit in the King Fahd Hospital in Madina on Tuesday after a head surgery. She is to have several plastic operations after she is out of the ICU.
