Iran’s state television says a 5.8-magnitude earthquake has jolted the south-eastern part of the country.

There is no word on casualties or damage.

The TV’s website says the quake jolted the Negar region of Kerman province at 11:22am local time (6:52 GMT). The area is about 1,075km south of Tehran.

Saturday’s earthquake comes only a day after a 5.7-magnitude quake injured 110 people in the northeast city of Torbat-e Heydariyeh, damaging several villages and temporarily disrupting communications.

Iran is located on seismic fault lines and is prone to earthquakes, experiencing at least one slight quake a day on average.

A 6.6-magnitude quake in 2003 destroyed Iran’s historic southeastern city of Bam, killing 26,000 people.
