Supermoon passes over the UAE without incident

The biggest full moon of 2011, the supermoon, appeared over the UAE horizon - theoretically at 6.16pm on Saturday - but bad weather meant that it was only visible much later.

The supermoon, however, did not cause any major catastrophe over the earth due to its gravitational pull, except a usual high tide over some parts of the ocean, reports said.
On Saturday afternoon at 3pm Eastern Daylight Time, the moon arrived at its closest point to the earth in 2011 - a distance of 221,565 miles (356,575 kilometres) away.
At its peak, the supermoon appeared 14 per cent larger and 30 per cent brighter than lesser full moons (when the moon is at its farthest from Earth), weather permitting. Yet to the casual observer, it may have been hard to tell the difference.
Meteorologists said that any coastal storm at sea around this time would almost certainly aggravate coastal flooding problems due to the high tide.
Sunday and Monday will be partly cloudy in general, cloudy with light to moderate winds. There are also chances of fog over different parts of the UAE, the National Centre for Meteorology and Seismology (NCMS) said.
