Woman attempts suicide as rapist remains free
A Saudi woman who was raped by two men last year tried to commit a suicide this week after she was told police have arrested only one of the rapists, a newspaper in the Gulf country reported on Wednesday.
The unnamed woman used a large quantity of pain killers to kill herself but was saved by doctors at a hospital in the western town of Madina, Sabq said.
“Her husband said she tried to commit a suicide because police have arrested one rapist but failed to seize the other,” the paper said.
The woman was snatched off near her house in August 2010 and taken to a deserted area, where she was raped by the two men.
Three months ago, a court sentenced the arrested rapist, in his 30s, to three years in jail and 1,500 lashes with the whip. Her husband had protested against the verdict and demanded death punishment.
