The world’s tallest clock tower in the holy Moslem city of Makkah, built on orders by King Abdullah bin Abdul Aziz of Saudi Arabia, will be officially inaugurated early next month, Saudi newspapers reported Thursday.

Rising nearly 380 metres above Masjid Al Haram (Holy Mosque), the world’s largest mosque, the clock is placed on top of the fifth tower of the King Abdulaziz Endowment project in Makkah, they said.

The project will use four clock faces for each side of the tower, including two main clocks that are 80 meters high and 65 meters wide.

There will be an elevator to take visitors to the surrounding balcony below the four clocks, which are adorned by the name of God.

“Work on the first phase of this project has been completed and it will be officially inaugurated at the start of the fasting month of Ramadan (early August),” the Arabic language daily Al Watan said.
