Would-be hubby asked for 'police clearance'

A Saudi man who wanted to marry got a shock when the girl’s father told him he must get police clearance before he agrees to the marriage.

The man, in his 20s, travelled to the western Red Sea port of Jeddah from his home town of Medinah to ask a relative to let him marry his daughter.

“The father said he had no objection, but told the suitor to get a police letter showing he has no criminal record,” Sabq newspaper said.

“The father justified his request by the fact that the husband of his elder daughter was mistreating his wife and the father discovered he had a criminal record.

“The father said he was cheated by that husband and decided to have his daughter divorced from him,” the paper added, without making clear if the new suitor agreed to that request.
