Saudi Arabia maintained its position as one of the countries with the highest divorce rates, recording an average 29 cases a day in the second half of 2015.

The Gulf kingdom’s courts handled a total 5,209 divorce cases during that period and most of them were between Saudi couples.

Capital Riyadh had the largest number of divorces, accounting for 31 per cent of the total, according to official data published by Sada newspaper.

Experts at a recent conference in Riyadh blamed the high divorce rate in Saudi Arabia to the wrong choice of spouse, educational gap, differences in habits and poor understanding of marital duties.

Other reasons include negligence, disregard or disrespect for spouse, violence and persistent disputes.
