Saudi may punish food wasters

Saudi Arabia is considering punishing people who waste food in public places within a crackdown on social extravagance, a newspaper reported on Wednesday.

The Shura (appointed parliament) is considering issuing a law allowing the municipality and other authorities to inspect restaurants, hotels, and other public eateries to ensure no large quantities of food are wasted, the Arabic language daily ‘Al Hayat’ said.

“The proposed fine could be 20 per cent of the paid food bill.

“The study at the Shura also proposes that the private sector takes part in the inspection campaigns along with the municipality,” the paper said.

It said the study follows reports that massive food quantities are being wasted by families in Saudi Arabia in violation of religious teachings which call for moderation.
