Saudi to test food imports from Japan

Saudi Arabia has decided to test foodstuffs and other consumer products imported from Japan to ensure they are not contaminated following a surge in radiation from a quake-hit nuclear reactor.

Newspapers said the Saudi ministry of trade and industry had informed all border customs points in the Gulf Kingdom to take measures to ensure all consumer items imported from Japan are tested before they are allowed in.

“You are requested to take these precautionary measures to ensure no contaminated item enters the Kingdom,” the ministry said in a letter to the customs department and the Saudi Authority for Specifications.
