Scaffolding collapse kills one in Dubai

A construction firm employee died on the spot and four others were seriously injured when the scaffolding of an eight-storied residential building under construction fell on top of a group of workers.

The collapse of the scaffolding - with sharp iron rods and heavy metal pipes – killed a Bangladeshi worker, Shamim Mohammed.

The incident took place at a building in Al Qusais, Dubai, on Saturday morning.

Dubai Police, Ambulance and Municipality officials rushed to the accident scene and moved the injured to the hospital.

An engineer working at the site said: “One worker was arranging the iron pipes fixing the scaffolding on the top floor. A temporary construction lift used to transport construction materials and workers was going up.

“A long heavy iron pipe moved by a worker standing at the top got entangled with the upwardly moving lift, upsetting the scaffolding fixings, leading to its collapse. All of a sudden the scaffolding fell on the four or five workers standing on the ground.”

The four injured workers are from Bangladesh, Pakistan and India.

Five cars in a car park have also been partially damaged by the falling scaffolding.
