Schoolboy drowns in lake
Officers of the police life-saving division recovered a body of a schoolboy of the Walisinghe Harischandra College, Anuradhapura, (Sri Lanka) early Tuesday morning, ‘Lakbima’ reported.
The victim was riding a boat and drove into a deep area in the lake while enjoying with several of his classmates.
They took few fishing boats from the Thalgasduwa boat-yard at the Nuwara Lake in Anuradhapura.
The deceased has been identified as, Aruna Dilantha Seneviratne (16), a class 11 student of the Walisinghe Harischandra College and a resident of Third Stage, Pubudupura, Anuradhapura.
Police reported that the victim had left home with 13 other pupils on Monday morning and drove six fishing boats without the permission of the fishermen.
As they arrived at the centre of the lake their boats collided and as a result it turned turtle, police claims.
The incident occurred approximately 11.00 am and then the victim went missing.
The fishermen, who saw their boats missing, had filed a complaint at the Anuradhapura police.
Though the students were present at the time the police arrived at the scene, they stayed silent about their missing classmate.
Six hours after the incident, a student had informed the victim’s father of the mishap and the officers of the police life-saving division recovered the body approximately 12 feet deep in the lake around 8.00 am on Tuesday morning.
Anuradhapura police are conducting further investigations.
