Selfless parents keep baby alive to donate organs

The brave and selfless parents of a baby who was declared brain dead agreed to keep the girl on ventilator so she could donate organs.

According to a report in Metro newspaper, this is the first instance when such a procedure has been carried out on a 'beating heart’ baby donor younger than two months old.

Earlier, organs could be harvested from babies less than 2 months old only if their heart had stopped. Now, the rules have changed and once the tests prove that an infant is brain dead, their organs can be taken for transplant.

According to the newspaper, about 60% of donors belonging to other age brackets are ‘beating heart’ donors.
