Sharjah airport's new runway 80% complete

More than 80 per cent of the civil works for the new runway for Sharjah International Airport has been completed.

The airport management in the presence of Sheikh Khalid Al Qassimi, Chairman of Civil Aviation Department – Sharjah and Ali Salim Al Midfa, Chairman of Sharjah Airport Authority, and a number of the engineers of the airport and those in charge of the project visited the site to view the progress made in this important project.

Sheikh Khalid said: “The new runway is very important for Sharjah International Airport as in the future it will be able to receive the wide body aircraft without restrictions, and this will add value to the international airlines that use the airport”.

He said: “The Department of Civil aviation is pursuing all matters related to the project in terms of safety, security and operations, as well as coordinating with the General Civil Aviation Authority in order to meet all certifications requirements to operate the runway according to the highest international standards”.

Ali Salim said: "The implementation of this project comes within the framework of the development plan drawn up for  Sharjah International Airport under the directives of His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qassimi, UAE Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, in order to  further enhance the image of the Emirate, and to cope with the increasing growth in passenger numbers and aircraft movements during the past years, especially that the region is witnessing rapid growth in the aviation sector ."

He added: “The project is being carried out in line with the highest international standards in order to ensure that it can host huge aircraft, also provide safe landing for aircraft in times of low visibility."

The project consists of the main runway spanning 4,060 meters and a width of 60 meters, has two “Taxi Ways”, and 10 connecting corridors which is intended to secure the aircraft out of the main runway in the shortest time to the hangar.

The runway is equipped with multiple systems, aeronautics and lighting, and electromechanical equipment to match the levels of operating efficiency (CAT II) and can be upgraded to (CAT III B) according to the approved specifications of General Civil Aviation Authority of the United Arab Emirates and the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO ) . The runway also is designed to receive large aircraft and new generations of aircraft (Code F), such as Boeing 747-800, Airbus A380 and giant freighters like AN124 and AN225.

The project also includes the implementation of a 15 km services road, and the construction of a security fence extending for 10 –kilometers, as well as implementation of the rain water drainage network.
