Six people were killed in 21 road accidents in the first week of the fasting month of Ramadan in Abu Dhabi, according to police.

Drivers in the emirate of more than two million people also committed nearly 21,590 offences on the roads, including reckless driving, failure to use the seat belt, jumping the red lights, lack of concentration and speeding.

About 12,000 offences involved exceeding the speed limit by 30 kph while 108 drivers were caught over-speeding by 60 kph.

There were also 82 offences involving jumping the red lights and 528 seat belt violations, according to deputy director of the traffic police department Brigadier Khalifa Al Khaili. “We call on all drivers to respect traffic laws and exercise self control especially in this holy month of Ramadan,” he said.
