Sorcerer gets one year jail, to be deported

A criminal court in Ajman sentenced a Moroccan man to one year in jail and ordered his deportation after he was convicted of practising sorcery and deception for money, a newspaper reported on Wednesday.

The unnamed man had misled his victims into believing he possesses powers to resolve marital disputes in return for Dh2,000, Emirat Alyoum said.

A police detective posting as a husband seeking help led to the arrest of the sorcerer at his apartment in Ajman, where police found candles, paper, amulets and other items used in his black art activities.

A Moroccan woman accused of helping him was acquitted on the grounds she was not aware of his fraud practices.

“The court acquitted the woman after the sorcerer convinced her that he was a spiritual healer who uses only the Quran in resolving social problems.”
