62-year old ‘luxury’ beggar arrested on Colombo train

A woman has been arrested while begging on a train bound to Colombo from Negombo.

Only, she revealed that she earns over Rs100,000 a month, the Daily Mirror reported.

During questioning, the 62-year old woman that she had earned Rs3,000 a day convincing passengers and commuters to part with their money.

According to an official of the Railways, the woman when arrested had Rs1,800 in her possession after an hour of begging.

A mother of two, she earns over 9,000 rupees on Poya (Buddhist religious) days at the Kelaniya temple, a suburb of Colombo.

She begs after displaying a growth in her abdomen, the woman had said during investigations, thus earning the sympathy of people.

Answering a question why she did not pursue a cure for her ailment, she had admitted that she lives a luxurious life and could educate her children due to her begging.

The Railway Security Authority has handed over further investigations to the police.
