Baby elephant dies after its tail is cut off

Colombo: Sentinels against Wildlife Crime (SAWC) in Sri Lanka has offered a reward of [Sri Lankan] Rs25,000 [Dh705] to anyone who could provide information on the death of a baby elephant.

A four-and-a-half year old elephant was found with its tail cut in Sri Lanka’s Kandan Palama area close to the Uda Walawe National Park.

According to Department of Wildlife Conservation (DWLC) officers, the baby elephant was taken to Ath Athuru Sevana for treatment, but they could not save the animal, reported Ceylon Today.

Elephant hair is expensive and is used to make jewellery. Also, locals believe wearing of elephant hair brings good luck.
