A graduate of a state university bested 49 other candidates to win the crown at the Bb Pilipinas annual beauty pageant on Sunday night at Smart Araneta Coliseum, in Metro Manila’s Quezon City.

Ariella Arida, who holds a BS Chemistry degree from the University of the Philippines-Los Baños, in Laguna province, was crowned Bb Pilipinas-Universe, and will represent the country in this year’s 62nd Miss Universe beauty pageant.

Besides the presence of high society in last night’s celebration, former winners also graced the Bb Pilipinas’ 50th anniversary, including Gloria Diaz, who eventually won Miss Universe in 1969, and Miss Universe 1973 Margie Moran, among others.

Last week, musician Lana Roi was disqualified from the pageant for posing in a sexy publication in 2010. She was featured in ‘FHM’ magazine as part of the promotion for the girl group Eurasia.

Bb is an abbreviation for Binibini, which is Filipino for Miss. Thus, Bb Pilipinas means Miss Philippines.

The 24-year-old Arida floored the judges and wowed TV viewers with her answer in the Q&A segment, where she was asked what women can teach men.

“One lesson in life that women can teach men is being sensitive,” she said during the pageant, whose live airing over ABS-CBN was watched by millions of people nationwide. “Men are more logical when it comes to decisions, they’re rational and straightforward. Unlike women, we use our hearts and we tend to get emotional when we make our decisions. Sensitivity is something that we women can teach to men.”

The Bb Pilipinas-International crown went to Bea Santiago while Cindy Miranda was adjudged Bb Pilipinas-Tourism and Mutya Datul won Bb Pilipinas-Supranational.

Actress and model Pia Wurtzbach was declared first runner-up.

The other winners are the following:

 Lourenz Grace Remetillo (Miss Friendship)
 Ana Carmela Aquino (Miss Talent)
Maria Teresita Alaine Baccay (Best in National Costume)
Ellore Noelle Punzalan (Reader’s Choice)
Joanna Cindy Miranda (Bb Petron)
 Mutya Johanna Datul (Miss Photogenic)

The others who landed at Top 15 were Imelda Schweighart, Grace Yann Apuad, Charmaine Elima, Rhea Nakpil, Amanda Navasero, Noelle Punzalan, Camille Nazar, Mariel de Leon, Joyce Respicio and Parul Shah.
