Did mom torture 6-year-old daughter to death?

Colombo: A 29-year-old Sri Lankan woman is in custody following the death of her daughter. The six-year-old was rushed to hospital by their neighbour after he found her lying limp on her mother’s lap one morning early this month.

The child was pronounced dead on arrival. The mother told doctors that the child had a fall. However, post-mortem on the child revealed burn marks and bruises and thus police began investigations.

People in the neighborhood have various stories to say of the family, while the shocking revelation came from the little girl’s brother.

He said that his sister had woke up at night to urinate and their mother got wild and asked her to use the toilet behind the house. The frightened girl began crying and was getting down the four steps that led to the toilet, when the angry woman kicked her from behind. The girl went tumbling down and wailed louder, when she picked her up by the neck and shook her yelling her to stop crying. And the girl went limp.

One of their neighbours said that the woman was in Saudi Arabia for some time and never interacted with anyone around. The children were also not allowed to play with other kids in the area. The doors and windows of their house were always locked.

The children’s father worked as a cleaner and earned [Sri Lankan] Rs10,000, of which they had to pay Rs7,000 as rent. The neighbour said that the suspect had approached her seeking employment. She earned Rs150 a day, by which she fed her kids.

Another neighbour alleged that the children’s father and grandfather often hit the kids and they heard them cry.

However, recently she had found work at a tea factory and things were looking up for the family, another neighbour said.

The boy also suffered from bruises on his body.

According to National Child Protection Authority (NCPA) statistics, between January and July this year, 714 cases of rape, sexual harassment against children have been recorded.

 

Man allegedly rapes and murders girl

Meanwhile, in a separate incident, a 37-year-old man in Batticaloa allegedly lured an eight-year-old girl to an isolated area and raped her before killing the girl.

According to police, the man was a frequent visitor to the girl’s house, and hence, the child would not have suspected him.

Post-mortem report confirmed the child was raped before being murdered.

Security in the area has been tightened a public are enraged.
