A schoolgirl committed suicide in Sri Lanka on Wednesday after the school principal scolded her severely over her picture that appeared on Facebook, local media has reported.

The girl, second in a family of three daughters, was preparing to sit for her O-level examinations this year.

On the day of the incident, the young girl had stayed back at home without going to school and had then hanged herself on a crossbar inside a room using some clothes as a cord.

It has been reported that someone had informed the principal that the girl’s photographs in school uniform were appearing on two social media networks. After browsing the websites, the principal had scolded her severely and had also directed her to counselling conducted at the school.

In a letter written to her father, the girl said she had become depressed after the principal warned her before a large gathering at the school after her photograph was published in Facebook.
