Female soldier shoots colleague

Published

A female soldier was arrested for shooting a female colleague on Monday for advising her not to carry an illegal affair with a married soldier who was also serving in the same camp.

The Island reported that they were attached to the Achchuweli 511 Brigade Headquarters in the Jaffna Peninsula where the incident had occurred.

The suspect was arrested by the Acchchuweli police who are conducting investigations into the incident while the injured colleague was receiving treatment at the Jaffna Hospital and both are 29 years old.

The incident had occurred around 2.30 pm in the camp, Police spokesman SSP Prishantha Jayakody told The Island, with the official weapon issued to the suspect who had used it to shoot her colleague while on duty.

“It was an accidental discharge of a bullet from a T-56 weapon, given to her, while on duty, that had hit the abdominal area of the victim and the victim is out of danger,” Military Spokesman Brigadier Ruwan Wanigasooriya said when asked about the shooting incident.

The police spokesman said, however, the suspect had admitted that she was in a complex situation and shot her colleague but was unable to say what happened beyond that.
