Grandfatherly figure molests teen girl

Colombo: A 60-year-old man has been arrested in Sri Lanka for sexually molesting a 13-year-old schoolgirl, the Sunday Mawbima reported.

The suspect, a father of four, was a neighbour of the victim’s family and, as the family was poor, he had sometimes given money to the victim.

Police said that after gradually getting close to the girl, he had taken her to a partly-built house nearby and molested her repeatedly. He also told her not to reveal it to anyone.

However, neighbours, who were suspicious about their behaviour, informed the girl’s parents who lodged a complaint with the police. The arrested suspect was remanded until February 7.

The victim, who was earlier admitted to Balangoda hospital, has been transferred to a hospital in Ratnapura hospital for further treatment.

Husband stabs wife to death, commits suicide

A truck driver stabbed his wife to death with a knife before committing suicide by drinking poison in Sri Lanka last Saturday,  Mawbima reported.

The wife worked in Seethawaka industrial zone and lived in a small rented room.

The husband had come to take her home on Saturday but she had refused and used strong words against him. So he stayed the night with the wife in her room.

At around 2am on the following day, neighbours and the house owner rushed to the room after hearing a loud scream and saw blood coming out of the room from under the door.

After being informed, police came and found the dead bodies of the couple. The dead woman’s neck was slashed and the man had fallen down after consuming poison.
