Helmet rule relaxed for Sri Lankan Muslims
Police in Batticaloa in Sri Lanka’s Eastern province has relaxed the helmet rule for Muslims going for Friday prayers, the ‘Daily Mirror’ reported on Thursday.
“It is compulsory to wear helmet when riding motorcycles. However, if you are going on a bike to attend prayers on Fridays in Kattankudy between 12noon and 2pm, it is not necessary to wear the helmet,” Batticaloa Deputy Inspector General (DIG) V. Indran said while addressing a meeting at Kattankudy Jami-ul-lapreen mosque.
“Though the law is the same for everyone, this concession has been given considering the atmosphere in Kattankudy. But it must not be abused. Wearing the helmet is compulsory at all other times. Otherwise, the police will take legal action,” he said.
The DIG also said, “The drug menace in Batticaloa must be tackled. Stern action will be taken. The public should cooperate with the police. Do not try to bribe them. If any police officer takes bribe or is involved in illegal activity, he will be punished.”
