Man hacks ex-lover and her mom to death
Colombo - A jilted lover hacked to death his ex-girlfriend and her mother, at their home in the Abeypura housing complex at Anuradhapura, local media reported.
The 30-year old man used a sword in the attack on his 23-year-old ex-girlfriend and her 62-year-old mother.
He had also attacked and critically injured his ex-girlfriend’s 62-year-old father, the police said.
The father was rushed to the Anuradhapura Teaching hospital.
Police believe the suspect may have carried out the attack as he was resentful that the girl had started an affair with another man.
The deceased were identified as Sheela Karunaratne (mother) and Thakshila Darshani Mali (daughter).
The suspect had been arrested a few hours later, SP Siriwardana said.
4-yr old dies, mum says doc was watching TV
A four-year old child allegedly died due to medical negligence after admission to a hospital in the Rattota area of Matale District, sources told Daily Mirror.
The child was identified as Pamudha Hirushan of Pallegama, Pitakanda in Rattota.
The child fell sick on Vesak Poya Day after he returned home from a pilgrimage to the Aluvihare Temple in Matale.
The child’s mother, Damayanthi Kumari said, “When we took the child to hospital, the doctor was watching TV.
“I pleaded with the doctor to help. He told me that the child has had a fit. A little later, he informed me that the child was OK, and went back to watch TV.”
The child’s father was too distressed to speak.
Prank SMS lands man in jail
An individual was arrested by the police and held in custody for sending an SMS to a member of the Matara District local body, using the name of the Minister Youth Affairs and Skills Development, Dullas Alahaperuma, was granted personal bail of Rs 200,000 when he was produced before the Matara Additional Magistrate, Manjula Prasad Karunaratne, recently.
The suspect who is 39-years old is from Weligama, the police revealed.
The mischievous SMS communication had contained a message requesting the local body member to attend a function purportedly hosted by the minister on the night of 14 April, when the Sinhala and Hindu New Year was being celebrated.
The member of the local body had visited Minister Alahaperuma's house at Radampola, only to be informed there was no function being held to celebrate the New Year and in fact, the minister had been out of the country at the time.
The mobile phone number of the mischievous caller had been traced through the service provider, leading to the arrest.
Stalker gets beaten
A businessman who had been tormenting a woman asking for her mobile number at a wedding reception was hammered mercilessly by a group of boys when she complained to them.
The businessman concerned aged 50, from Vavuniya, Thandikulam, had been invited for a wedding reception at Kandasamy Kovil Road. He owned a spare parts business.
While he was at the reception hall, he was attracted to a girl with whom he tried to start a conversation.
He approached her and asked for her mobile number and the girl was taken aback. She avoided him but the businessman did not let her be in peace. He kept on asking for the mobile number.
Being annoyed and irritated, she warned him to keep away from being a pest.
The woman abruptly left the reception hall warning him and had got into a three wheeler to get home.
She was relieved from the 'pest' she met.
However, she noticed that the businessman was giving chase on his motorbike.
After she reached her neighborhood, she got off and approached some of the boys who were standing by the road.
She then conveyed about the man who was stalking her.
Immediately, the boys held the businessman by his collar and started to beat him up.
