Marriage swindler held for deceiving women

A man who allegedly swindled Rs157,000 from a woman after promising to marry her, was arrested by the Sri Lankan police on Sunday.

The Island newspaper reported that the Warakapola police in the North Western Province arrested the man after receiving a complaint from the woman.

The suspect had allegedly similarly deceived women in Habaraduwa, Balangoda and Mirigama and he had taken Rs15,000, Rs300,000 and Rs200,000 respectively from them, according to the police.

The suspect, a resident of Menikdiwela in Kandy, was produced before the Thulhiriya Magistrate on Wednesday and remanded to police custody till February 1.
