Mentally ill girl raped, impregnated

A middle-aged man has been arrested in Sri Lanka for raping and making a teenaged mentally handicapped woman pregnant, the ‘Sunday Mawbima’ has reported.

Police said the 19-year-old victim was living with her godmother since her mother was employed abroad. Her father had abandoned the family after the mother went overseas.

Investigations revealed that when her godmother had gone out to have a bath one day, the 45-year-old suspect, who lived nearby, came to their house and raped the victim after finding her alone.

Police said the suspect had raped her on several occasions while the godmother was away. The godmother had taken the victim to hospital when she noticed some changes in her behaviour.

Doctors at the hospital confirmed that the young woman was three-months pregnant.

Police produced the suspect before the magistrate’s court which remanded him.

Teen-driven car kills mother and daughter

A car driven by a 15-year-old schoolboy hit a woman and her daughter crossing a road in Sri Lanka, killing both of them, the ‘Mawbima’ has reported.

The road accident happened on the night of Saturday January 16.

The 47-year-old mother and her 10-year-old daughter were thrown forward by 20 metres and 40 metres respectively, police informed the Colombo chief magistrate’s court.

The suspect boy’s mother, who was arrested on charges of abetting him to drive the car, was remanded along with the boy until January 28.

Police urged the court to refuse bail for both the suspect woman and her son to preserve public peace as people living nearby were tense.

The court ordered the suspects be produced on January 28 for an identification parade and to keep the boy under the custody of an orphanage till such time.
